Specs: 7.7 lbs; 11.4"x2.5"x11.4"; Power consumption: 250W; USB slots: 2; Output: A/V and HDMI

Company: Sony

Sony dropped a game-industry bombshell at gamescon in Germany last August when the company revealed the latest PLAYSTATION 3 model, the Slim. The PS3 Slim is lighter, consumes less energy and is cheaper. The PS3 Slim didn't only usher in a new model in Sony's console line, but it also marked a product-wide price drop for the often fiscally criticized system. The older "fat" PS3 saw a slice of $100 from its price tag, while the brand-new Slim retails right out of the gate for $299.

With built-in Blu-ray, Wi-Fi and a 120GB hard drive, the $299 Sony PS3 Slim is one of the best console deals on the market. It is amazing what a long-awaited price cut and reconfigured hardware setup can do for a system, but with the PS3 Slim, Sony finally showed the competitive spirit that should make its 2009 holiday season a successful one.

The measurements of the new PS3 Slim are about two-thirds the size of the original, yet it still carries a healthy weight and feels incredibly well-made. Sony has also ditched the ultra-glossy finish for a matte style that is both more aesthetically pleasing and less conducive to attracting and showing dust and finger prints.

As far as true feature additions go, there is really not much to be found in the PS3 Slim. Those with large game collections will be disheartened to hear that there is still no backwards compatibility on the Slim for PlayStation 2 titles.

What is very interesting about the motivations behind the PS3 Slim is that most console redesigns come about as a need to refresh consumer interest, but the Slim was solely created as a reaction to the need to cut costs. Because of this origination, there was clearly a lot more creative thought and practical thinking put into the Slim, as opposed to just some shiny new lights.

Due to the downsizing, some features had to be cut from the PS3 Slim's spec sheet. The most minor omission is the loss of the ability to install additional operating systems. One small new upgrade is that if you have a Sony TV, the Slim's control can be integrated, via BRAVIA Sync, right into the television's remote. Even though Sony failed to include something like an HDMI cable or address backwards compatibility, the Sony PS3 Slim still stands to represent the best deal in current generation gaming. Supported by such standout titles as Metal Gear Solid 4 and inFAMOUS , and with a stellar exclusive holiday lineup ahead, the PS3 Slim is a great way to take advantage of PlayStation gaming and Blu-ray video.

If you're not a PS3 kind of guy, you might want to check out the Wii or the PSP go.
