Fujifilm FinePix Z700EXR

=- Overview -=

Price: $279.95

Official Site: Fujifilm.com

Specs: 3.5" LCD touchscreen; 12MP CCD sensor; Fujion 5x Zoom; Dual image stabilization; Auto Facebook/YouTube upload

Company: Fujifilm Corporation

Announced earlier in February 2010 (and becoming available in April), the Fujifilm FinePix Z700EXR is the first of a new class of touchscreen compact cameras designed to make snapping and sharing photos as easy as tapping a screen.

Distinguished by a few key feature additions such as easy web uploading, a dual direction GUI and dual image display technology, this sleek pocket-friendly camera is a good basic option for guys looking for a hassle-free photo experience. Particularly for those whose camera budget is less than $300 and view image quality as a top priority. Fujifilm loyalists who desire the feel of actual buttons for navigating through camera commands and features should look at others models in the company's compact line, such as the FujiFilm FinePix F70EXR.

Physically, the Fujifilm FinePix Z700EXR stands out from other pocket cameras thanks largely to its eye-catching curved slide-down lens cover that also serves as an on/off switch. On the back, a 3.5-inch touchscreen LCD offers more than enough real estate for viewing and adjusting photos. Taking cues from the iPhone and competing compacts from Canon, a dual direction GUI can now detect the orientation of the screen and automatically switch the direction of the menu buttons accordingly.

Another new addition related to the touchscreen is the dual image display. In this mode users can split the screen in various ways to see multiple images at once. This makes for faster scrolling through large film rolls or showing off choice shots quickly. Despite its slim form factor, the camera still also packs a Fujinon 5x zoom lens along with several other must-have image quality features such as Fujifilm's renowned 12-megapixel Super CCD EXR sensor, dual image stabilization, ISO settings up to 3,200, and 720p HD video capture.

Rounding out picture settings, the Fujifilm FinePix Z700EXR comes equipped with so called "Face Recognition" technology. Built off normal face detection functionality, this software allows users to preprogram up to eight "favorite" faces. From then on, these faces will be given preference in terms of focus and exposure when detected in any shots by the camera. So-called "Pet" detection is another convenient focus setting included for recognizing pet faces. So, whether it's your girlfriend or her prissy Chihuahua you're directed to shoot, pictures of either should come out looking clean and crisp.

While there's no doubt about this camera's ability to perform admirably for those in search of a new pocket-size point-and-shoot, the reality is that the Fujifilm FinePix Z700EXR falls short when it comes to new cutting-edge features. Though perks like wireless uploading, integrated projectors, 3-D shooting capabilities, and geo-tagging may all seem superfluous to a camera buyer focused on photo quality, these new tweaks are available in competing compacts in the Z700's price range and do provide some level of future proofing. Needless to say this hampers the camera's street appeal in the market and puts buyers at greater risk of finding their camera outdated long before it actually stops working.

For true fans of Fujifilm, the Z799EXR's faults may be worth ignoring in exchange for top-notch image quality from a touchscreen point-and-shoot.
