Company: Monster, LLC

W hat do you think of celebrity-marketed products?

What doesn't Dr. Dre do? The man's a rapper, a producer, an actor, a director, and an entrepreneur. He's planning to release his own brand of booze to coincide with his next CD release, he got HP to put out a limited laptop with his brand all over it and his Beats By Dr. Dre headphones are hanging around some of the coolest necks in town. That company alone should be enough to give you an ego boost, but the compliments you'll receive from all your envious friends will put your big head over the top.

The Beats By Dr. Dre Solo headphones marry the company's great-sounding cans to a microphone and iPod control pod. The solos are perfect for anyone who likes pop culture, extreme style and good sound -- and who doesn't mind paying Sennheiser-level bucks for a Monster product.

As with all of Dre's headphones, the Solos are extremely good-looking in a slick, metro sort of way. The removable cable is covered by a substantial red sheath for a little extra ruggedness, and features gold-plated connectors: a straight one for the left headphone and a right-angle one for your iPhone. Near the top of the cable, there's a mic and buttons for answering calls or controlling your tunes. The headphones are foldable and include a cool carrying case and microfiber cloth for keeping things nice and clean. All in all, it's a good-looking package, though some may find the construction to be too lightweight for rough use.

The Solo's sound is good, but it has a tendency toward hip-hop-friendly bass and a slightly muddy upper range that works better with some styles of music than with others. So, while we're not talking about audiophile-level sounds for electronica lovers, the Dr. Dre Solos are more than good enough for bopping down the boulevard to Kanye.

Clearly, the Beats By Dr. Dre Solo headphones are no slouch in either the sound or looks department. But in terms of construction, they're fine for normal use, but the guy who is constantly tossing his headphones into his bag or putting them on and taking them back off might find the Solos a little too fragile. There's also the concept of spending $200 on headphones made by a company best-known for cables. That being said, Dr. Dre Solos have style and enough sonic oomph to please most, and at a price that's not great, but not completely off the chart. For about the same dough, the Bose On-Ear Headset offers sound-cancelling, crisper sound and a similar cable-mounted mic and control pod.
